When shape-shifting magician Rumfo appears and Birdy learns she is a Ward, a rare power source for wizards, she's elated to use her powers to help others. But with only a few sources of magical power left, soon wizards from all over the wasteland fight to steal Birdy for themselves. Amid the chaos, Birdy looks to Rumfo for guidance... unfortunately, he's only in it for himself.

As a monster hunter serving the Speaking Eye, every hunt is the same: a request is made, blessed by the seer, the outcome known in advance. There is no point to fighting the hunters when they come for you. The end is known before it has even begun. But, deep in the woods, Artemia's next target is different, and things don't go to plan. For the first time ever, Artemia doesn't see it coming.
